Protecting Africa’s Rhinos Takes More Than Watching From a Safari Vehicle

At the end of 2024, IUCN estimated that 22,540 rhinos remained in Africa: 15,752 white rhinos and 6,788 black rhinos. Protecting these populations requires continuous monitoring, security, veterinary care and responsible wildlife management.

 

Rhino Xpeditions gives a small number of guests the rare opportunity to step beyond the role of observer and become part of that protection effort. What Rhino Conservation Actually Involves

Conservation work around the Baobab rhino herd can include protective monitoring, translocation, tracking-collar fitting or replacement, veterinary treatment, dehorning when required for security, and the collection of health and identification data. Guests participate only under the direction of the wildlife team.

Fully Immersive Experience

Rhino Xpeditions is led by Gavin Robinson, a wildlife-management specialist with more than 40 years of hands-on experience across Africa. During rhino operations, guests work alongside wildlife veterinarian Dr Heinrich Vollgraaff and the wider conservation field team.

Air Experience

Darting is generally from the air. At some stage you will experience a birds eye view of the ongoing operation. The pilot and veterinarian will explain each action taken by them

Ground Experience

Those of us on the ground will gently manoeuvre the rhino into the sternal recumbency position. The rhino team will take the lead, calling our eco-tourists to help when it's safe

White Rhinos

White rhinos are generally easier to work with, as they often go down in open areas. As part of this unforgettable experience, you'll be directly involved in every step of the process — from placing the eye cover and ear plugs to fitting the tracking collar and monitoring their vital signs.

Black Rhinos

Black rhino find the thickest bush to hide in and so when the drug takes effect we need to work fast.

Tracking Collar

This collar enables the rhino to be tracked and located 24/7. Your participation in these operations will help increase the survival rate of these endangered animals.

Through supervised and ethical participation in dehorning and collaring operations, data capture of measurements, DNA samples and animal health, you will help safeguard these majestic animals from poaching and support vital wildlife research.

"I’ve lived my whole life in Africa, interacting with wildlife in one way or another, living on a game ranch, raising orphaned wild animals, being part of game capture operations, observing the odd animal being sedated, flying in a helicopter looking for animals, BUT never ever have I had an experience like this.
